“The Zen of the Well”

The young seeker looks inward,

the mind like the grid of a well,

intersecting lines forming nine palaces,

like the Eight Trigrams unfolding,

containing infinite wisdom within.

The central palace, still and unmoving,

is the Taiji of the mind,

from which all creation arises,

and to which all silence returns.

The four corners, like spring, summer, autumn, and winter,

endlessly transforming,

bursting with vitality, yet dissolving into stillness.

The four cardinal points, like east, west, south, and north,

balanced in tension,

the framework of the mind,

holding up the contours of heaven and earth.

The grid-like mind

is the order of all things,

and the root of chaos.

The nine palaces interweave,

like the state of meditative Zen—

both active and still, both empty and full,

the myriad reflections of the mind,

and the ultimate resting place of the heart.

The young seeker whispers softly:

The grid within the mind is not merely nine palaces,

but nine heavens,

rising from earth to sky, from mortal to sage,

layer upon layer, step by step, returning to the heart.

The Zen of the Well

is the map of the mind,

and the sequence of the Dao.

Amid the intersections,

find the central palace where one finds peace.

Amid motion and stillness,

witness the endless cycle of heaven and earth.
