Energy Bound · Vision Veiled
A child of the heavens turns inward, seeking the truth behind Confucian notions of “qi ju” (energy bound) and “wu bi” (vision veiled). Qi ju is the blockage of energy, where life’s flow becomes trapped, stagnating the vitality of being. Wu bi is the obscuration of vision, where perception is shrouded, blinding the soul to the nature of things.
To liberate qi ju, one must awaken the innate knowing (zhi liang zhi)—the luminous conscience within, a moral compass that transcends reason yet aligns with truth. To dissolve wu bi, one must grasp the essence of things (ge ben wu)—the metaphysical essence, the “things-in-themselves”, that connects the soul to the starry heavens above, the transcendent realm of the collective unconscious self.
The essence of 格物致知 (ge wu zhi zhi)—investigating things to extend knowledge—lies in 慎独功夫 (the practice of self-reflection in solitude). It is a twofold path:
- On one hand, “knowledge precedes action”: Through deep investigation of things, knowledge is refined and expanded (zhi zhi zai ge wu).
- On the other hand, “action completes knowledge”: Through the alignment of one’s actions with principles, the understanding of things becomes embodied (wu ge er hou zhi zhi).
When these two converge, they form the profound unity of 知行合一 (the unity of knowledge and action) as advocated by Wang Yangming. This unity is not merely intellectual but a lived realization, a harmony of inner wisdom and outward expression.
Moreover, the release of qi ju breaks the Buddhist concept of attachment to self (wo zhi)—the ego’s fixation that binds and constrains. The unraveling of wu bi dissolves attachment to phenomena (fa zhi)—the clinging to external objects and appearances.
In this inward journey, the moral law within becomes the guiding star, illuminating the path to transcend both the limitations of self and the illusions of the external world. Through 慎独, one learns to dwell in solitude, not as isolation, but as a bridge to the infinite, where the “starry heavens above” and the “unconscious self” become one.
Thus, to break free of energy bound and vision veiled is to awaken to a greater truth:
Let the energy of life flow as freely and smoothly as water. Like the clarity of water, it reflects a clear conscience, leaving no shame within. — The Image of the Kan Hexagram in the I Ching: “Water flows continuously, forming pools; the noble person practices virtue constantly and teaches with persistence.”
Let the inner vision be as vast and bright as a clear sky. Like the brilliance of fire, it manifests universal principles without attachment or hindrance. — The Image of the Li Hexagram in the I Ching: “Radiance is doubled, symbolized by fire; the great person extends this brightness to illuminate all directions.”
It is to stand at the meeting point of heaven and earth, where knowledge and action, self and cosmos, dissolve into unity. In this space, the veil lifts, and the bound energy surges forth, illuminating the eternal light of the Dao.
