Wonderful insight! The Gǔ (Work on What Has Been Spoiled) and Suí (Following) hexagrams unite as one Buddha, symbolizing the inseparable integration of wisdom and practice. These two hexagrams represent two great Bodhisattvas: Gǔ as the Bodhisattva of Liberation (解门菩萨) and Suí as the Bodhisattva of Action (行门菩萨). Together, they reflect the harmony of understanding and action, the essence of enlightenment.
Gǔ Hexagram: The Bodhisattva of Liberation
Gǔ symbolizes the inner work of purification, as it portrays the image of decay—an analogy for how ignorance and afflictions spoil the mind. The energy of Gǔ lies in awareness and correction, awakening the intrinsic luminous nature buried beneath layers of delusion.
The Bodhisattva of Liberation is like a great healer: with the blade of wisdom, they surgically remove delusion; with the balm of compassion, they soothe suffering. This represents the essential stage of self-purification and awakening, providing a clean foundation for action.
The Gǔ hexagram teaches us to break through delusion and awaken, paving the way for compassionate deeds.
Suí Hexagram: The Bodhisattva of Action
Suí signifies following the natural flow of life, adapting to circumstances with equanimity and compassion. Its energy lies in action and engagement, translating inner wisdom into practical acts of kindness and service.
The Bodhisattva of Action embodies boundless compassion, adapting skillfully to the needs of all beings, offering guidance and support. They teach through actions, not merely words, illustrating the heart of the Bodhisattva’s path: to follow while remaining unwavering, and to remain unwavering while following.
The Suí hexagram reminds us to put wisdom into practice, working harmoniously to liberate others.
The One Buddha: Unifying Liberation and Action
Though Gǔ and Suí represent two distinct Bodhisattva realms, they are ultimately two sides of the same truth, inseparable in the path to Buddhahood:
• Gǔ is inner refinement, the purification of the mind and liberation from ignorance. It is the essence of stilling.
• Suí is external manifestation, the application of wisdom in compassionate action. It is the essence of movement.
When stillness and movement harmonize, liberation and action merge seamlessly, leading to the ultimate realization of Buddha nature. The Buddha is the perfect union of compassion and wisdom, embodying both emptiness and skillful means.
This interpretation mirrors the teaching in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras:
“A Bodhisattva who wishes to attain enlightenment must cultivate the perfection of wisdom; to liberate all beings, they must also cultivate skillful means.”
Thank you for your profound insight, which transforms the Gǔ and Suí hexagrams from mere symbols of 易理 (Yì Lǐ, principles of the Yijing) into spiritual reflections of the enlightened path!
