Prose Poem, “The Yao爻”
In silent meditation, Tianlai gazes into the character “爻”—
A single stroke, infinite meaning,
A wordless symphony, waves rising in the stillness.
Yao represents the dual flow of wisdom and compassion,
The energy of life coursing through space and time,
Breathing as heaven and earth,
Dancing as light and shadow in eternal transformation.
Two Crosses: The Meeting of Yin and Yang
The lower cross (“乂”)—deep as the Northern Black Tortoise,
The root of heaven,
Holding the energy of the inner hexagram,
A well of unconscious compassion,
Dark and silent,
Yet brimming with potential.
The upper cross—soaring like the Southern Vermilion Bird,
The dwelling of the moon,
Carrying the energy of the outer hexagram,
A cauldron of collective unconscious wisdom,
Radiant yet grounded,
Overflowing with clarity and insight.
One cross rises, one cross descends,
And Yao, poised between them,
Unites heaven and earth,
Flowing ceaselessly between the two.
Roots and Caverns: Dual Currents of Compassion and Wisdom
The Northern Black Tortoise weeps compassion like an ocean,
Its lower cross sends waves upward,
Transforming the unconscious whirlpools of emotion
Into the crystal-clear well of equality wisdom.
The Southern Vermilion Bird burns with wisdom like a sun,
Its upper cross shines downward,
Illuminating the labyrinth of collective unconsciousness,
Melting away attachments into the cauldron of discerning insight.
Heaven’s roots, earth’s caverns—
Compassion and wisdom flow in perpetual exchange.
Inner and Outer: The Turning of the Sixth and Seventh
Within the inner hexagram lies the seventh consciousness,
A black hole of self-attachment,
Yet, touched by the radiant flow of wisdom,
It transforms into a well of equanimity.
In the outer hexagram dwells the sixth consciousness,
A labyrinth of attachments to the external,
Yet, embraced by the compassionate current,
It becomes the cauldron of subtle, discerning insight.
The sixth and seventh turn in balance,
The fifth and eighth achieve their fullness,
Like rivers merging into the vast ocean,
Like the sun and moon harmonizing over the mountains.
Breaking Through the Fog of Ignorance
The fog of ignorance disperses, pierced by compassion and wisdom.
The five sensory consciousnesses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch—
Transform into all-accomplishing wisdom,
Crafting the world like an artisan,
Turning clay into treasures.
The eighth storehouse consciousness,
Through the dual currents of roots and caverns,
Becomes the Great Perfect Mirror Wisdom,
Clear, stainless, and all-reflecting.
Though Yao is but a humble character,
It holds within it infinite wisdom and compassion,
The unity of heaven, earth, and humanity.
Tianlai smiles, murmuring softly,
“Yao is none other than the Way of the Xin.
Heaven and earth unite, yin and yang harmonize.
All flows are the dance of compassion and wisdom.
All stillness reveals the truth of the Middle Way.”
Prompt:Prose Poem: “The Yao爻”
Tianlai meditates inwardly: the Yao.
1. The character Yao represents the life-energy flow of compassion and wisdom in spacetime.
2. The character Yao consists of two crosses (乂), symbolizing the energy flow where yin and yang intersect.
• The lower cross (乂) represents the energy of the inner hexagram within the six-line structure.
• The upper cross (乂) represents the energy of the outer hexagram.
• Together, Yao embodies the complete energy of the hexagram.
3. The lower cross, rooted deep, corresponds to the Northern Black Tortoise at the “heavenly root,”representing the unconscious self’s great compassion.
The upper cross, high and expansive, aligns with the Southern Vermilion Bird at the “moon cavern,”
symbolizing the collective unconscious self’s great wisdom.
4. The complete hexagram is a dual-directional energy flow between the heavenly root and the moon cavern:
• One flow rises upward: the compassion of the lower cross and inner hexagram.
• The other flows downward: the wisdom of the upper cross and outer hexagram.
Together, they reveal the Middle Way of harmony between above and below, compassion and wisdom.
5. Within this flow, the emotional black hole of self-attachment in the inner hexagram—
the seventh consciousness, manas, linked to the unconscious self—
is illuminated by the great wisdom of the energy flow.
This transformation becomes a well of Equality Wisdom.
6. In the outer hexagram, the maze of law-attachment—
the sixth consciousness tied to the collective unconscious—
is embraced by the great compassion of the energy flow.
This transformation becomes a cauldron of Subtle Observing Wisdom.
7. When the sixth and seventh consciousnesses turn in balance,
the fifth and eighth achieve fullness.
“The causes transform within six and seven,
The fruits are completed in five and eight.”8. The fog of ignorance disperses, the sun shines through the clouds:
• The five sensory consciousnesses—eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body—transform into All-Accomplishing Wisdom, capable of creating and manifesting with skill.
• The eighth consciousness, alaya,
becomes the Great Mirror Wisdom,
vast, stainless, and perfectly clear.
Thus, the humble Yao encapsulates the profound:
the dual currents of compassion and wisdom,
the unity of heaven and earth,
and the Middle Way of truth.
Tianlai smiles and whispers:
“In Yao lies the Dao of the Xin.
Compassion rises, wisdom descends.
Yin and yang meet in harmony,
All is but the dance of the Middle Path.”
