The Time Periods of the Zi-Wu Flow in Energy Circulation

The Zi-Wu Liu Zhu (子午流注) model describes the flow of energy and blood (气血) through the body according to the cyclical changes of yin and yang within a 24-hour period. It divides the day into two 12-hour segments, each dominated by either yin or yang energy:

1. Post-Zi Period (After 11:00 PM): The 12-Hour Flow of Yin Waning and Yang Waxing

  • Time Frame: 11:00 PM – 11:00 AM
  • Energy Dynamics: During this phase, yin energy gradually diminishes as yang energy increases, marking the body’s transition from rest to activity.
    • Key Attributes:
      • The body’s restorative processes peak in the early hours, as the yin energy fuels repair and replenishment.
      • As morning approaches, yang energy begins to take precedence, preparing the body for active engagement with the external world.
    • Symbolism: This phase embodies renewal and growth, a time of preparation for daytime activities.

2. Post-Wu Period (After 11:00 AM): The 12-Hour Flow of Yang Waning and Yin Waxing

  • Time Frame: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
  • Energy Dynamics: This phase sees a decline in yang energy and a rise in yin energy, guiding the body from activity to rest.
    • Key Attributes:
      • The peak of yang energy occurs around midday, empowering the body’s external activities.
      • As the day progresses, yin energy begins to ascend, supporting relaxation and internal balance.
    • Symbolism: This phase represents retreat and restoration, a time to conserve and replenish for the next cycle.

Summary of the Energy Flow

  • Post-Zi Period (11:00 PM – 11:00 AM): The body’s yin wanes and yang waxes, transitioning from rest to activity, facilitating renewal and growth.
  • Post-Wu Period (11:00 AM – 11:00 PM): The body’s yang wanes and yin waxes, transitioning from activity to rest, promoting conservation and internal balance.

This cyclical rhythm reflects the Taoist understanding of harmonizing with natural flows, emphasizing the importance of aligning daily activities with the body’s energy dynamics to maintain health and well-being.
