The Artistic Realm of Enlightenment: The Fusion of Buddhist Realization and Confucian Great Learning

[1st Person, I] Activation of Inner Buddha-Nature

[The Self-Aware World of One Individual]
Vairocana Buddha teaches us that enlightenment arises from within. This corresponds to the Confucian principle in the Great Learning: "Investigate things so that things are fully investigated (格物而物格)."

  • Natural suchness: Everything is inherently perfect as it is.
  • Among the eight principles of the Great Learning, only this one is unique: it lacks the "first" of introspection (反求诸己) and the "then" of altruism (推己及人).
  • "There is fundamentally nothing; where can dust alight?"

The Great Learning states:

"Things have roots and branches; events have beginnings and ends."

Heaven’s Little Child (天来小子) reflects:

  • The 格 (investigation) in 格物 represents a lifelong pursuit of understanding.
  • The 物 (things) in 物格 embodies the unity of essence and manifestation, seamlessly integrating root and branch, beginning and end.

This principle echoes Buddhist teachings: enlightenment requires no addition, only realization of the unbroken harmony of existence.

[2nd Person, U] Conscience in Action

[The Shared World of Two Beings: You and I]
Amitabha Buddha teaches us: “The Pure Land is within the mind. When the mind is pure, the land is pure.”
This corresponds to the Great Learning principle: "Extend knowledge, and then knowledge is extended (致知而后知致)."

  • The "extension of knowledge" aligns with the activation of the Southern Vermilion Bird's lunar intuition (致知而后知致).
  • It resonates with the Northern Black Tortoise's cosmic root (格物而物格).

Notably, among the eight principles of the Great Learning, only this one explicitly includes "then" (而后), signifying the progression from personal cultivation to altruistic action.

  • Moral cultivation can feel like "mountains exhausted and waters ended," but this struggle leads to the unexpected encounter of "blossoms and a bright future"—a realization of inherent virtue (性德).

The Great Learning declares:

"The Way of Great Learning lies in manifesting luminous virtue, bringing people closer, and achieving ultimate goodness."

Heaven’s Little Child (天来小子) elaborates:

  • The first luminous virtue (明明德) is moral knowledge gained through effort.
  • The second luminous virtue is innate conscience, realized effortlessly.
Thus, the awakening of conscience belongs to the illumination of innate virtue.

[3rd Person, S(he)] The Flow of Heavenly Principles

[The Perfected World of You, Me, and Others]
Shakyamuni Buddha reminds us: "The path to enlightenment lies in this world; seeking it elsewhere is like chasing the horns of a rabbit."
Moreover, Shakyamuni personally exemplified this teaching through 49 years of discourse, dedicating his life to the evolution of humanity toward enlightenment. Yet, many cling to fantasies of otherworldly paradises, neglecting the precious reality of the here and now.

This aligns with the Great Learning principle: "Make intentions sincere, and then intentions are sincere (诚意而后意诚)."

  • The sincerity of intention emerges from the Northern Black Tortoise's cosmic roots (格物而物格).
  • It blossoms into the Eastern Azure Dragon's vitality and the Western White Tiger's focus, creating a harmonious dance of dragons and tigers.

Among the eight principles, this one includes one "first" for introspection and two "Then's for progression to altruistic action:

  • Insincere intentions are plagued by delusions and attachments.
  • Sincere intentions flow naturally from a tranquil spring.

The scholar Liu Zongzhou reflects:

“Intentions are where ultimate goodness resides, where conscience (良知) and essence (天理) converge. The root of intention is subtle, and its sincerity is heavenly.”

Heaven’s Little Child (天来小子) adds:

  • The subtle root of intention aligns with the Northern Black Tortoise’s cosmic root.
  • The heavenly essence of sincerity corresponds to the interplay of the Four Symbols and Five Animals, grounding the present moment in the Yellow Dragon's timeless truth.

The Unified Artistic Realm of Enlightenment

  1. [I] Awakening Within: Enlightenment begins in self-realization, as Vairocana Buddha and the Great Learning’s 格物而物格 reveal.
  2. [U] Conscience in Action: Moral awakening transforms the external world, as Amitabha Buddha and 致知而后知致 illuminate.
  3. [S(he)] The World’s Flow: Perfect harmony arises in the shared journey of all beings, as Shakyamuni Buddha and 诚意而后意诚 embody.

Heaven’s Little Child concludes:
The paths of 格物 (investigation), 致知 (knowledge extension), and 诚意 (sincerity) converge into one living art:

To awaken fully is to live fully. The art of enlightenment is nothing more than the perfect harmony of body, speech, and mind, rooted in the here and now.
