13. The Contemplation of Tianlai
In the stillness of the night, Tianlai sat with his eyes closed, his mind as calm and clear as a pool of water. His thoughts drifted through countless realms, arriving at a place of profound introspection.
“The character for ‘dream,’” he murmured to himself, “with its upper and lower parts—‘up’ being the forest, ‘down’ being evening. Hmm, the sentient beings have already slept through countless eons in this forest of the long night, yet they still cannot wake up!”
14. The Revelation of the Word "Dream"
The character "dream" appeared simple, but its meaning stretched far beyond its form. Tianlai's thoughts flowed like light, moving through the structure of each character, revealing an ancient, vast forest and the endless night. He saw that all beings had long fallen asleep in this boundless night, trapped in an endless cycle of sleep and awakening, and still could not escape.
“In this evening's forest, how many are unable to wake up?” Tianlai sighed, his heart stirred. Dream—this very essence seemed to be the source of all illusions, shrouding the world in a deep fog.
15. Slow Down! Look Again at the Character "Dream"
“Wait!” Tianlai suddenly paused, his eyes narrowing as he gazed once again at the character “dream.” A flash of realization struck him. “Look again! There is more to this character!”
He saw the deeper secret within the character’s form—the left side showed a tree, which represented the Tree of Life, and the right side also showed a tree, representing the Tree of Wisdom. Together, they formed a Bodhi tree.
“Ah! I see it now! This is the Bodhi tree!” Tianlai exclaimed. “The left side is the Tree of Life, representing the world of Samsara, the endless cycle of life and death. The right side is the Tree of Wisdom, representing the world of Hua Zang, the realm of enlightenment and compassion.”
These two trees intertwined, creating the ultimate symbol of the Pure Land—where wisdom and peace coexist.
16. Awakening in the Present Moment
A surge of energy filled Tianlai’s heart as he gazed at the double trees in the forest. It felt as though the fog of time and space had lifted, revealing the deepest truth.
“Awaken in this moment, in the evening of this double-tree forest!” Tianlai declared, his voice ringing clear. “People, wake up! You are lost in a dream, but here, in this place where life and wisdom meet, you can awaken to the true reality.”
“Awaken, oh beings of the world!” he continued. “In this double-tree forest, life and wisdom are united, and the Pure Land and compassion are one. This is the time to awaken, to let go of the past dream and embrace this present moment of true enlightenment!”
17. Dream — The Moment of Awakening
Tianlai closed his eyes, feeling the powerful force of awakening within him. He understood that this awakening belonged neither to the past nor the future, but to the present, to this very moment.
In this forest, where the two trees intertwined, dream and wakefulness, life and wisdom, compassion and enlightenment, all came together to form the eternal present.
