Interpretation
This statement reveals the profound essence of life’s threefold roles:
• The Bodhisattva as a Madman: The Bodhisattva enters the world with boundless compassion, playing their part selflessly. Their “madness” is the courage to let go of self-interest and embrace a seemingly irrational dedication to enlightening others.
• The Sentient Being as a Fool: Sentient beings watch the drama unfold, unaware they are part of it. Lost in illusions, they may seem foolish, yet the play itself offers a chance for awakening.
• The Buddha as the Sovereign: The Buddha transcends all illusions, writing the script of life, directing the path of awakening, acting with compassion and wisdom, and witnessing the perfection of self-realization.
Together, these roles form the grand theater of existence, a cosmic dance where each is essential to the whole.
Gatha
The mad Bodhisattva plays love’s role,
The foolish sentient being pays life’s toll.
The sovereign Buddha writes, acts, and sees,
Threefold in unity, life flows with ease.
