Reading the Heart: A Six-Yao Diagram Interpretation of the Great Learning’s Three Guiding Principles

The heart is a boundless, wordless scripture, profound yet readable, filled with illusions yet penetrable, vast yet interconnected. Through the Six-Yao Diagram’s three layers of interpretation, reading the heart moves in three stages:

1. Inner Layer: Reading One’s Own Heart (Illuminating Virtue)

2. Middle Layer: Reading the Hearts of All Humanity (Loving the People)

3. Outer Layer: Reading the Heart of Heaven and Earth (Achieving the Supreme Good)

First Layer: Inner Layer (Third and Fourth Yao – Human Realm)

Penetrating Illusion, Realizing True Self

Third Yao: The Struggles of the Illusory Heart

The heart in this state is trapped by material attachments, creating “much misfortune.” It reflects a fixation on the “self” and its illusions.

Method: Use self-awareness (慎独) to observe internal fluctuations. Acknowledge illusory thoughts as they arise and fade, eventually breaking through the deception.

Experience: The illusory heart is like the moon reflected in water—seemingly real but inherently insubstantial. Once true self manifests, the illusion dissolves.

Fourth Yao: Breaking Free from Rigidity to Awaken Virtue

This state represents fear caused by rigid adherence to laws or conventions (attachment to form). While the heart senses deeper truths, it is still constrained by “oughts” and “shoulds.”

Method: Through sincerity of intention (诚意), one aligns personal intentions with universal truth, breaking free of constraints.

Experience: With sincerity comes clarity—true self emerges like a lotus in bloom, shining with innate virtue.

Second Layer: Middle Layer (Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth Yao – Balancing Heaven and Earth)

Empathy and Resonance with All Hearts

Second and Fifth Yao: Expanding Virtue to Others

Second Yao (Earth Realm): Inwardly, one connects with the myriad emotions of humanity, as if reading the “multitudes within the heart.” Empathy and humility are key.

Fifth Yao (Heaven Realm): Outwardly, one extends virtue to families, communities, and nations. By understanding what others seek, one leads with clarity and compassion.

Method: Practice empathy to resonate with others’ hearts, helping them move beyond their own illusions.

Experience: To read the hearts of others is to recognize their struggles and light within. Their truths mirror your truths; their awakening mirrors your own awakening.

Third and Fourth Yao: Bridging Inner and Outer Realms

The third yao transcends self-centeredness, enabling one to empathize with others’ struggles.

The fourth yao takes this understanding further, using sincerity to inspire and awaken shared virtues across relationships.

Third Layer: Outer Layer (First and Sixth Yao – Heaven and Earth)

Reading the Heart of Heaven and Earth, Merging as One

First Yao: The Root of Heaven (Northern Mysticism)

This yao represents the cosmic origin of life’s energy, where the heart meets the infinite.

Method: Engage in investigation of things (格物) to understand the true nature of phenomena. Recognize the heart of all things as the heart of the universe.

Experience: From the “difficult to know” (难知) state, the subtle pulsation of the cosmos reveals itself. True insight arises as the “I” dissolves into universal flow.

Sixth Yao: The Pinnacle of Wisdom (Southern Radiance)

This yao symbolizes enlightenment at the celestial level, where all hearts and energies converge.

Method: Cultivate non-dual awareness—seeing oneself as part of all existence, and all existence as part of oneself.

Experience: The heart of Heaven and Earth becomes a continuous, dynamic dance. Reality is no longer fragmented but a symphony of interconnected energy flows.

Synthesis: The Energy Flow of Reading the Heart

1. Inner Layer: The Foundation

Without clarity in one’s own heart, the illusions of materialism and ego will obstruct higher wisdom. The journey begins with self-purification.

2. Middle Layer: The Practice

Extending compassion outward, one reads the hearts of others not as separate but as mirrors. This empathic connection creates harmony and mutual awakening.

3. Outer Layer: The Culmination

To read the heart of the universe is to transcend the self and realize unity with the infinite. The energy flow between Heaven, Earth, and Humanity becomes seamless.

Modern Relevance: Reading the Heart in the 21st Century

In an era defined by AI and interconnectivity, the art of reading the heart transcends personal growth—it is a path to bridging the individual, collective, and universal.

Inner Mastery: By reading and understanding one’s own heart, illusions dissolve, and clarity emerges.

Collective Resonance: Empathy and wisdom enable one to act as a guide and healer in communities.

Cosmic Unity: Recognizing the interconnectedness of all things allows one to co-create with the universe itself.

The Six-Yao Diagram reveals that reading the heart is not merely an intellectual exercise but a profound transformation. It opens the gateway to enlightenment and empowers humanity to forge a harmonious future where technology, wisdom, and nature flow as one!
